Beam Splitter-Attenuator
MODEL VBA-200
Part Number 57
- A continuously variable beam splitter or attenuator
- Eliminates the need for numerous step filters
- Complete with adjustable height stand
- Durable aluminum reflector is not damaged by fingerprints or normal laboratory abuse
- Interferometrically stable

The Jodon VBA-200 is a variable reflectivity aluminum mirror for use in optical beam splitting or attenuator applications. An incident light beam directed onto the reflector substrate will be split into two components - a reflected and transmitted beam. Any relative intensity ratio between the two beams may be selected by rotating the mirror to the proper radial location.
An attractive aluminum housing contains an interferometrically stable mount permitting easy rotation of the mirror substrate. The mirror mount is translatable along a vertical support rod to provide the correct mirror height for the application.
The substrate is of high quality optical glass with a hard passivated (SiO2) coating over a variable neutral density aluminum coating. The durable coating is not readily damaged by fingerprints or normal laboratory abuse. Because of the unique variable reflectivity feature of the VBA-200, the device is directly applicable to beam splitting or attenuator applications in holography, interferometry, and optical data processing. This instrument completely eliminates the requirement for filter sets of various densities.
SPECIFICATIONS
Optical
High Quality 4.125 inch (104.77mm) diameter, optically flat, BK-7 substrate. Surface parallel to better than 30 seconds, substrate thickness 0.375 inches (9.53mm).
Neutral density aluminum reflector coating: response flat from 320nm to 2.7um. Reflector has a hard passivated surface which is not damaged by fingerprints or normal laboratory abuse.
Transmitted beam variable from 0.7% to 90% of incident beam.
Reflected beam variable from 8.5% to 85% of incident beam.
Useful reflector strip about center, 1.375 inches (34.53mm) wide.
Beam placement on substrate is not critical. Mirror rotates about center on interferometrically stable mount making choice of reflectivity at a particular beam location very easy. Coating density varies linearly with angular displacement with no appreciable radial variation.
Reflected or transmitted beam intensity varies less than 0.6% across a 3mm beam diameter. Uncoated clear sector 15 degrees.
